Organize a Virtual GIS Day
Educators, are you looking for a new way to celebrate GIS Day? Consider hosting a virtual GIS Day with another class in a different state or country. Students can communicate with one another, similar to a geography pen pal program.
This is a great opportunity to expose students to another culture. If this sounds interesting, contact the GIS Day team at gisday@esri.com to be connected with another participant.
Featured GIS Day Event
Successful GIS Day at Sage Community School
In partnership with the National Park Service, Sage Community School celebrated its first GIS Day in 2007. Chris Wayne, GIS specialist from Crater Lake National Park, visited the school and gave a short presentation on mapping techniques and world demographics to fifth- and sixth-grade students. He made maps at various scales using ESRI's ArcGIS Explorer and invited students to look at the patterns of land use, population, and precipitation across the globe. Read more.
The 2008 GIS Day registration system is now open. Register your event today!

GIS Day shirts awarded for the most interesting submission
In the previous issue of GIS Day Watch, the GIS Day team announced the Activity Search Challenge. Many of you have developed creative GIS Day programs and activities of your own. We would love to hear your ideas and are asking that you share your knowledge with the GIS Day community.
Please take a few moments and submit a GIS Day activity you've created to gisday@esri.com. This could include a GIS-related game; a creative GIS Day activity that teaches GIS to attendees; a GIS Day theme idea; or GIS Day materials you've designed: posters, signs, crossword puzzles, and so forth.
The committee will pick the most interesting submission and the winner will be awarded five GIS Day shirts. The entry deadline has been extended to Friday, March 28.
Thank you to everyone who has submitted a GIS Day activity!
Using GIS to Study Sports
A recent post to the GIS Education Community blog explores what's possible when using GIS for sports and recreation analysis to answer questions, such as where to locate venues; organize running and cycling trails; or even track a soccer player's location throughout a game! Read more.
GIS Day Participants' Corner
In each issue of GIS Day Watch, the GIS Day team posts a question asked by members of the GIS Day community. To ask a question, make a comment, or give feedback, take a minute and contact us.
Anonymous GIS Day participant writes:
"I was wondering if you have videos that show a general overview of GIS."
GIS Day team responds:
Yes! Here are some videos that are perfect for your next GIS Day event.
