New GIS Day Promo Video
Join us as we visit GIS Day events hosted by Loma Linda University, the Libraries of the Claremont Colleges, and Stantec Consulting Inc. This video offers insight into the many benefits of hosting a GIS Day event, illustrates how different organizations are celebrating GIS Day, and provides ideas and encouragement to the GIS Day community. We hope this video inspires you to join the tenth annual GIS Day celebration, Wednesday, November 19, 2008. Watch the video. [ZIP-22 MB]
Map Challenge Game
Test your knowledge of world geography with this new interactive map game. The game contains 12 levels of increasing difficulty based on categories such as famous world cities. It is not only an exciting test of the location of geographic landmarks but also the speed and accuracy of the player in recalling those specific places. Be careful: once you start, you will be hooked! Play the game.
Collection of Web Mapping Sites
Need ideas for your next GIS Day event? Consider showing your audience GIS functionality with Web mapping applications. Web mapping applications come in all shapes and sizes, and their uses vary depending on the intended purpose of those who create them. Explore a collection of exciting Web mapping applications built by organizations, universities, and government agencies. View the list.
Celebrate World Ocean Day with GIS
Have you heard of World Ocean Day? Neither had we until recently. According to its Web site, World Ocean Day was first proposed in 1992 by the government of Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro as an opportunity to celebrate our world ocean and our personal connection to the sea. Consider incorporating GIS into a World Ocean Day celebration. Here are some resources to help you get started:
- GIS for Marine and Coast
- Map Book Gallery
- Best Practices: GIS for Ocean Conservation [PDF-2.47 MB]
- Case Studies
Free Software Download
ArcExplorer - Java Edition for Education: A free version of ArcExplorer - Java Edition for Education (AEJEE) and corresponding resources are available for download from the ESRI Education Community Web site. AEJEE is a downloadable, lightweight GIS tool for exploring geographic data. The Web site provides a wealth of information including overview documents, software tutorials, and lessons that apply to various fields of study. This is a great (and free!) tool to assist with your next GIS Day event.
Exhibit Your GIS Day Maps
Share a map you created for a GIS Day event with others in the Map Gallery at the 2008 ESRI International User Conference (ESRI UC) in San Diego, California. Submit your entries by July 7, 2008. Listen to tips on how to make an effective map [MP3-13:15] provided by ESRI UC Map Gallery judges Jonathon Corbridge and Ian Sims.
