GIS in the Americas
This year's theme of the National Geographic Society's Geography Awareness Week is Mapping the Americas. Here are some examples of how people across the Americas benefit from the use of GIS in their communities:
Hurricane Preparedness
As the Caribbean and Atlantic regions enter the peak of hurricane season, GIS is helping people prepare for and respond to these natural disasters. Read more about the role of GIS in these types of disasters.Youth Football
Youth football programs are on the rise faster than any other team sport in North America. A study was done by the National Football League (NFL) to find out more such as location and funding of these numerous programs. Read more about how GIS was used to help gather this information.Conservation in Bolivia
Forest accounts for 65 percent of the area of Bolivia. Learn how researchers and conservationists are able to map this land cover and predict possible threats to all the diverse species that call the forest home.
GIS Day Participants' Corner
In each issue of GIS Day Watch, the GIS Day team posts a question asked by members of the GIS Day community. To ask a question, make a comment, or give feedback, please take a minute and contact us.
A GIS Day Participant Writes
"Is it possible to have an editable version of the 2008 flyer? We are celebrating GIS Day on a different day than November 19 and would like to be able to change the date to fit our own event."The GIS Day Team Responds
Many of our GIS Day materials also have editable versions available for download. They can be personalized to fit the date, time, and location of your event. Check out specific resources or browse all the materials.
