Bangor High School
Bangor, ME
We celebrated GIS Day by checking the publication of our maps in the Wednesday edition of the Bangor Daily News. Every year, for Geography Action, and Newspapers in Education Week, the National Geographic Society highlights a continent(s). This year the Americas were showcased; Bangor High School's GIS in Geography class studied demographic and environmental concerns in the Americas.

GIS is transforming secondary social studies education at Bangor High. In Fall 2006, Bangor High School offered the first year-long course dedicated to using GIS to learn geography with Margaret Chernosky as teacher and colleague, Stacy Doore, UMaine Engineering GK-12 Sensors Fellow. This class evolved as an outgrowth of a partnership with National Science Foundation GK-14 Sensors whose mission is to promote engineering, science, and technology education in U.S. classrooms. Now in its third year, it is composed of an energetic group of eager students of mixed ages, abilities, and computer skills. See photos.
