GIS Day 2009 at Myford Elementary School, in Irvine.

Myford Elementary School in Irvine, California, celebrated GIS Day for the seventh year. We started this event in one kindergarten classroom in 2003. This year, more than 600 students from grades K–5 were fortunate to learn about GIS and its use in our daily life. The children were involved in many different activities.

As in previous years, Mrs. Haderlein and Mrs. Ramirez took the lead for the kindergartener and first grader activities. The kids made Map Hats and planned their own city. The children made the houses with colored paper. They created their own streets after their teachers' names and each class created a big map on their wall. On November 18th, each child put his/her own house on the big map. Then they did the analysis on where they should plan all the public facilities to be. In fourth grade, Mrs. Martin's class was interested in how GIS can help them in their daily life. They also enjoyed playing the GIS Jeopardy game. Most of the kids have learned about GIS from previous years and they were very interested to know more. The kids had lot of fun and can't wait for next year to celebrate GIS Day again. GIS Day now becomes a tradition at Myford to be celebrated every year. See photos.
