GIS Day in the "Land of Lincoln," McLean County, Illinois, U.S.A. was another great success. The day-long open house event was held on November 18th, 2009, and it featured GIS technology demonstrations, presentations, a geography quiz, and lucky prize draws.
This year's event was another collaborative effort by several local governments, academia, and national sponsors such as: The McLean County Regional Planning Commission, Town of Normal, City of Bloomington, McLean County Emergency Telephone System Board (ETSB/911), City of Bloomington Township Assessor, McLean County, GEOMAP & Geography Club - Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, and National Geodetic Survey. In attendance were several elected public officials, engineers, assessors, planners, students, government employees, information technology professionals, and the general public.
The morning session included a proclamation declaring November 18, 2009, as GIS Day by the local leadership. This was signed by McLean County Board Chairman- Matt Sorensen, City of Bloomington Mayor- Steve Stockton, Town of Normal- Mayor Christopher Koos, Illinois Wesleyan University President- Richard Wilson, and Illinois State University President- Alvin Bowman. City of Bloomington Council members- Bernie Anderson & Steven Purcell and Carl Teichman- Director of Government and Community Relations for Illinois Wesleyan University were also in attendance. A GIS Day cake was cut by Chairman Matt Sorensen and a lunch was sponsored for the attendees by ISU. The cake design celebrated the 200th anniversary of Lincoln, GIS Day 2009, and geography.
The afternoon presentations were a mix of academic and government GIS applications and were very well received. The lucky draw prizes were announced at closure, and an ISU student won the grand prize of a TomTom portable GPS navigation equipment. See photos.
