This year the Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics of Eötvös Loránd University celebrated GIS Day on November 9. The activity was organized in two parts: first welcome speeches from Prof. Istvan Klinghammer (Ex Rector of our university) and Gabor Remetey-Fulop, who represented the Hungarian Association for Geo-information (Hunagi). Later, Jesus Reyes Nunez talked about the connection between Geography, Cartography, and GIS, followed by a short a multimedia-based lecture about basic concepts of GPS, presented by our colleague Bela Kovacs. The "theoretical" section was finished with this presentation, but the rainy weather impeded the realization of the planned Geocaching activity. Changing the programme the pupils had the opportunity to visit the GPS station on the roof of our building and to try the practical use of GPS there. Children also could see the Map Exhibition organized in the same place with the Hungarian winner maps in international competitions organized by the International Cartography Association (ICA) in 2009, 2007, and 2005. Finally, pupils and teachers visited the Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics, its library, map room, and the collection of globes.
