"The Queen's College GIS Youth Club decorated two bulletin boards around the school to depict the new and exciting technology that GIS has to offer. The GIS Youth Club started off the morning by conducting the senior school assembly. These members explained what GIS was and how it could be used in the modern world. During this assembly, three senior students, who had attended the URISA Caribbean GIS Conference during the half-term holiday, talked a little bit about their experience and what they learned about the new and emerging technology of GIS.
Miss Danielle Hanek also came to bring greetings from The BNGIS Centre and to give a little more information on the role of GIS and the study of geography and its relevance in today's world. The assembly was closed with a prayer from another one of our senior members. Feedback from staff members was positive as many of them had never heard of GIS technology.
During the day, we were fortunate to have two guest speakers who brought us additional information about GIS technology. Approximately 120 grade 9 students were exposed to PowerPoint presentations on GIS technology. Mr. Duane Miller from the BNGIS Centre and Miss Shantelle Lopez, a former Head Girl of Queen's College, representing the Water and Sewage Company, showed the students how GIS technology is used in the real world. Miss Lopez fascinated the students with aerial photography of various sites in New Providence. She also showed a very practical use of GIS technology with respect to the local water system distribution. Miss Lopez used one of the students, Rojarra Armbrister, to find out where she lived, and to try and find her house using GIS and aerial photographs. Mr. Miller kindly left gifts for the students who answered his questions correctly. In addition, several maps of The Bahamas were also given to the school. Mr. Miller gave newsletters for the students, which were later distributed. Some copies were also given to the school library.
Miss Hanek brought a GIS Day cake along for the GIS Youth Club, which they were pleased to accept. Various GIS Day gifts: pencils, buttons, and whistles were circulated to the club members." - Ms. Maria Tsavoussis, Geography Teacher
