The BNGIS Centre, the Transportation Policy & Planning Unit, Road Traffic Department, Ministry of Transport, in conjunction with a Government High School, a Geographic Information Education Project (GIEP) school, held a GIS Day 2006 event on 15th November 2006. The students refreshed their knowledge of GIS and were introduced to GPS technology.
"Students were extremely excited about the various ways the technology was used in developing the bus database. For example, I explained that the first step to creating the database was that you had to know what information existed in the field; once this was known, you then created a data dictionary to aid the data collection process when in the field." - Troy McIntosh, Ast. Transportation Engineer
A total of 17 students participated in this event. Throughout the event, there was a lively exchange between the presenters and students as they were intrigued by the possibilities of GIS. Participants received gifts provided by the BNGIS Centre and other sponsors for answering questions correctly.
Students also shared in the cutting of the first ever GIS Day cake baked and designed by one of the students.
