City of Longview
Longview, TX
The City of Longview, in partnership with Gregg County Appraisal District and East Texas Council of Governments, presented an entertaining, educational, fun-filled GIS Day extravaganza at the City's fairgrounds exhibit building. Approximately 725 attendees (mostly local 4th through 9th grade students) enthusiastically relished the various games, presentations, and interactive expositions. Some of the day's informative recreational activities included the GIS Emergency Response Team's "Pin the Disaster on the Map" game, the Metropolitan Planning Organization's "Global Basketball Hoop Shoot," the Parks and Recreation Department's "GPS Race," Public Works' "Solid Waste Shuffleboard," and GCAD's "School District Ring Toss." A diverse assortment of colorful analytical maps adorned almost every available inch of wall space while projectors displayed GIS-related films and images. A working glow-in-the-dark miniature-scale version of the City's wastewater treatment facility awed and dazzled the masses, and Professor World captivated an appreciative audience with his engrossing geographic knowledge. Ultimately, Longview's GIS Day 2007 was a resounding spectacular success, inspiring one of the event's participants to exclaim, "I believe GIS Day will only grow each year, adding bigger and more informative ways that make our city work!" And so we already anticipate next year's planned festivities with avid enthusiasm galore. - Roger Moser, Jr. (City of Longview GIS Data Steward) See photos.
