The Tenth Anniversary of International GIS Day broadly celebrated by the Department of Geography and Environment, Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. This Department first introduced GIS as an academic curriculum in Bangladesh in the 1990s. For the expansion of GIS knowledge, the Department provides a course named "Certificate Course in GIS." People from different sectors of Government and NGOs attend this course. Students of the Department learn GIS as direct course curriculum both theoretically and practically.
Celebration of International GIS Day added a new dimension here. It increased the curiosity about GIS among students, both Geography and Other Discipline.
In 2008, the Department has arranged a spacious colorful celebration of The Tenth Anniversary of International GIS Day. Jamail Basir was selected Convener for arranging the Tenth Anniversary of International GIS Day. A long Rally decorated with GIS Day T-Shirt and GIS Day Banner was arranged. Professor Mohammed Muniruzzaman, Vice-Chancellor, and Professor Syed Abdul Hye, Treasurer of Jahangirnagar University, took part in the Rally and put on a GIS Day T-Shirt. After circulation of the Jahangirnagar University Campus, the Rally came back to the Department. The Chairperson of the Department of Geography and Environment Professor Dr. Razia Sultana cut a nice GIS Day Cake. A discussion of GIS Day 2008 took place at noon chaired by the Chairman of GIS, RS and IT Committee of the Department of Geography and Environment, Professor Dr. M. Nazrul Islam.
