This cake was presented to the GIS Section by the rest of the department—Legal, Lands, and Planning—on their annual GIS Day on Wednesday, 19th November 2008, on St. Helena Island in the South Atlantic Ocean. Submitted by Ayla Phillips, GIS Technician.

The GIS Services Department of Forsyth County, Georgia, celebrated GIS Day by hosting a GIS Day Gala event. They had representatives from government agencies, local businesses, and national firms join them with displays in their map gallery and presentations in the main event. The morning was topped off with this fabulous GIS Day cake (shown by John M. Kilgore, GIS Services Director) which was generously sponsored by the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce. It was half chocolate with fresh strawberry filling and half vanilla with lemon custard. And it was ALL gone at the end of the day. Submitted by Mary Jo Black Enderby.

The entire student body (1,645 students) of the Hannibal High School, Kenney Middle School, and Fairley Elementary School participated in this event in Hannibal, New York. Students, teachers, and support staff shared in consuming 11 or more staff-designed GIS cakes during lunch. "The University of Kentucky Facilities [in Lexington, Kentucky] celebrated GIS Day 2008 by promoting its new type of cartographic output with its CAD-to-CAKE conversion efforts. Post CAD-to-CAKE, geostatistical analysis was performed by employees mapping their years of service on a sugary floor plan layout. Five edible categories symbolized years of service to UK with seasoned employees dominating early arrival times and window offices. Floor plan analysis never tasted so sweet with the results offering proof that M&Ms melt in your mouth, not in your hands." At MUS in the Czech Republic, they prepared a GIS Day cake and GIS Day T-shirts decorated with the special logo which they created for GIS Day in their company. This logo represents Earth in the mouth because their motto for this year was "Celebrate GIS Day 2008 with the smile!" See closeup of cake. Bermuda's first GIS Day cake! The Bermuda Government's GIS Committee celebrated GIS Day 2008 at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum, and Zoo. This delicious GIS Day cake was served to attendees during an exhibition of GIS demonstrations. Displays included examples of GIS use in archaeology, topographic surveys, addressing, and conservation of Bermuda's unique natural environment. The Scholars' Lab at the University of Virginia hosted GIS Day festivities highlighted by map expert and digital innovator David Rumsey speaking on "Giving Maps a Second Life with Digital Technologies," a map gallery display, a user showcase with 13 area groups demonstrating their GIS accomplishments, a guided tour of the historic Schwartz map collection, and a luncheon talk by Dr. John Scrivani of the Virginia Department of Forestry. Mr. Rumsey's talk was co-sponsored by the UVA Center for Emerging Research, Scholarship and the Arts. The GIS Day cake was decorated with an aerial photo of Thomas Jefferson's Academical Village. The Dept. of Geosciences at Oregon State University held a Geo Bake-Off to kick off GIS Day. Volunteers donated baked goods (pictured above are rum cake, edible GPS unit, flags of the world cookies) and held a lunch-time bake sale to support the Geo Club. Geo Club members are planning a club field trip to Israel and Palestine in the spring, and these yummy goodies helped spread the word about GIS Day and contribute to the Spring Break trip plans. The Geosciences Department at Oregon State University celebrated GIS Day with a visit from over 200 middle school students from the Willamette Valley. Bulgaria celebrated GIS Day 2008 with presentations and demonstrations at five universities. In this 2-story cake, the first floor contained the GIS Day logo while the second floor represented the map of Bulgaria. "It was really beautiful, big and, of course, really tasty!" PAGIS (Pulaski Area GIS) celebrated GIS Day at the Alltel Arena in North Little Rock, Arkansas. They chose "GIS to the Rescue" as their theme due to the tornado outbreak and flooding within the state this year. The cake on the left represents the tornado track while the cake on the right represents the flooding area along the White River. Submitted by Julie Kent.
The Clay County, Minnesota, GIS Department had this cake for their event. It gave the GIS team time to slow down and talk to everyone about how GIS could be used to help other departments and originations. The GIS staff at Connected Nation in Washington, DC, celebrated GIS Day 2008 with this cake emblazoned with a Kentucky Broadband Platform Map. The map, which is a comprehensive overview of broadband (or high-speed) internet services across the state of Kentucky, was enjoyed by all Connected Nation employees. This cake, served at the Savannah Area GIS (SAGIS) event in Savannah, Georgia, was to thank the 23 public, private, and educational organizations that put on the event which was held to educate local school children about GIS and its many different applications. Our first non-cake entry, this was done for the Texas Water Development Board event in Austin, Texas. The "Texas Hummus Map Plate" was created out of a 24"x30" inch map. The Alaska Arc User Group (AAUG) celebrated the 10th Annual GIS Day at their monthly meeting in Anchorage, Alaska. They had a record turnout of about 35 people for this month's meeting.
