Success Story Guidelines
In addition to submitting a 100-word summary of your event, feel free to submit a more detailed account of your activities, if desired. Photos, fliers, agendas, or presentations are all examples of what you might like others to see. A Word document, a pdf file, PowerPoint (see below), or HTML are all acceptable formats. Please zip your files and submit them with your summary (through the browse window provided) or, if sending them at a later date, please reference your event ID number (which will be provided when you submit your story) in any future correspondence.
Content Guidelines
Please remember that your story will be read by people all over the world. Acronyms or place names that are familiar to people in your locale are probably not going to mean anything to someone half-way around the world, so please spell out any acronyms and use specific place names.
Graphics Guidelines
If possible, digital graphics files are preferred; gif of jpg files should be Web-ready, no more than 300 pixels wide. Tif files are acceptable but should not be larger than 1 MB and not more the 300 pixels wide. The same is also true for bmp files.
Try to pick the 6-8 best and most representative photos of the activities at your event; dark photos do not show up on the Web, so pick well-lit scenes where possible.
Please do send identifying captions for your photos; identify what is going on, what the location is, who is present (list names where possible), as well as any appropriate behind-the-scenes information (such as who made the cake, who/what software made the poster, etc.). We suggest you put your captions in a Word doc. and zip it with your images.
If you do not have the capability to scan your photos into digital files, we can do that for you. Mail your hard-copy photos to GIS Day Coordinator, ESRI, 380 New York Street, Redlands, CA 92373-8100. If you wish your photos returned, please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope.
Newspaper/Magazine Articles
Did you get an article about your GIS Day activities published in a local newspaper or magazine? Terrific! Unfortunately, due to copyright laws, we cannot post copies of such articles on the GIS Day Web site [without the publisher's written permission]. But, by all means, we do want to know about them, and be sure to mention them in your 100-word summary! Send digital or hard copies to GIS Day Coordinator, ESRI, 380 New York Street, Redlands, CA 92373-8100 USA. If the newspaper/magazine publishing the article has a Web site where the article is posted, we can, of course, link to that, so do let us know. And congratulations on getting your event publicized!
Make Your Own Presentation
In previous years, some have chosen to make PowerPoint presentations of their activities, complete with captions, backgrounds, logos, and these were great! If you have the time and desire, this is a great way to present your photos for others to view. Please submit it with your 100-word summary, but do try to keep the file size to a minimum for downloading purposes.
Release Form
Photos of school children must be accompanied by a Model Release Form, signed by the parent of each child in the photo. Mail signed forms to GIS Day Coordinator, ESRI, 380 New York Street, Redlands, CA 92373-8100 USA. Please refer to your event number in your correspondence.
