The Eureka Springs High School EAST Lab students presented to the Eureka Springs EMS personnel the status of one of their community service projects, the Emergency Evacuation Plan for the Eureka Springs High School.

EAST students Matt Lucy and Brandon Jacobs used SketchUp, an architecture design software, to create a scaled down model of the High School. Using old High School blueprints and current building measurements, the students replicated the High School's buildings, classrooms, gym, offices, gardens and parking lots. Lucy and Jacobs want to provide the Eureka Springs EMS personnel with accurate renditions of the high school that include emergency exits, work areas with possible biohazard materials, and potential evacuation bottlenecks. Working with fellow EAST students, specifically the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mappers, the EAST students plan to overlay all their architectural drawings over aerial photos of the High School. The project's goal is to assist EMS personnel in efficiently and safely evacuating the High School during an emergency.

The EAST Lab is a high school class that encourages students to use high-end technologies to solve community problems. To learn more about the EAST Lab, please contact EAST facilitator Mila Lynne Floro-Powell at 253-2936 or 253-8875.
