2006 Success Story

GIS Day 2006 at
Instituto Salesiano Nuestra Señora de los Remedios - Obra de Don Bosco
Buenos Aires, Argentina

On November 16th of 2006 Aeroterra attended as users and promoters of GIS software to the school "Nuestra Señora de los Remedios" in Buenos Aires. The school is part of the Don Bosco worldwide schools known like "Salesians Schools," the school is in the Avellaneda Park district of our City.

Two presentations were made, one in the morning and another one in the afternoon. The purpose of our visit was to celebrate, like in other parts of the world the GIS Day, and it als was the first time that the celebration is made in a school of the city.

The presentations were made within the arts and sciences fair of the primary level that the school celebrates annually for this date, also coincidental with the month of the "Nuestra Señora de los Remedios" Virgin celebrations.

As students and parents approached the booth that the school had arranged for us, they all left astonished of the educational value of GIS. Specially parents and teachers appreciated the value of GIS as a path for new and interesting learning subject for the students.

Aeroterra also prepared a conceptual map of the district, the parish and the Avellaneda Park, places familiar to everybody at the school and of high emotional value for them. Children were very happy to see this out of the ordinary experience, and parents and grandparents also enjoyed it.

We left an open proposal to continue moving forward in the discovery of the GIS software as educational tool in each one of the levels (kindergarten, primary and secondary) offering educational tools to teachers and students so they can collaborate in the learning of different areas: pc, geography, and languages.

The School directors also were excited with the idea, and they are already thinking on how to incorporate contents in the classrooms in 2007, also they thanked us in front of the students and the community for ESRI's and Aeroterra's presence in the school.

The event raised a strong interest in GIS, and we have a pending presentation at the Secondary Level.
