2007 Success Story

GIS Day 2007 at
Kenney Middle School
Hannibal, New York, USA

GIS is embedded at different levels throughout the world in numerous career fields. Several teachers from the Hannibal School District this past summer created GIS activities and units to use for the 2007-08 school year. A few members of the group decided to support their curriculum work by hosting a GIS Day in our school district to showcase careers in our community related to GIS.

Many phone calls were made, commitments were made by many people, and detailed plans were put in place. The GIS Day final outcome was a positive influence on students, staff and our local community. The following agencies in our local community participated in the event:

There were a total of 8 different presenters and all together they did 31 presentations that were forty-five minutes in length. The total overall student's attendance was 1,031, representing grades 5 through 8. The others involved in the day included 17 teachers representing several different disciplines, 2 board of education members, 2 principals, the superintendent of schools, and several visitors from the community.

Throughout the day the guest speakers from local organizations, individuals, businesses and colleges that use GIS shared with students how GIS technology is used in real world to manage geographic information and solve problems. The presenters also shared personal stories, maps, PowerPoint shows, and tools used in their fields.

The Home and Career classes designed GIS cakes for the entire student body to consume during lunch on GIS Day!

A big thank you goes out to the GIS Day web site, which provided many resources and guidelines to help our event run smoothly.
